Sin can be described as any disobedience to the commands of God. Any sin is an act of rebellion and carries with it a punishment. Rom 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, Sin is serious, punishable by death. If the penalty of sin is not paid for in full then the sinner awaits God's wrath and eternal judgement. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
When the Son of God the sinless Jesus died on the cross it was the offering of His blood, His life, to the righteous Father as full payment for all human sin. 1Jn 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. His blood applied to a persons heart cancels their debt of sin and frees them from its penalty. Gal 5:1 - It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Rom 5:9 - And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, He will certainly save us from God's condemnation.
Sin is powerful enough to separate us from the loving God who created us to be loved by Him! To be forgiven deals with past sin, which is awesome! Then what? Are we left to continue on sinning? People are born sinners, all of us. Romans 3:23 - For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. People sin because it's human nature to do so. That is the nature people are born with. Dogs bark because they're born that way. Cats meow because they're born that way. People sin because they're born that way.
Jesus sets us free from the power sin. he does this through changing the natural human nature. This is done when we are "Born Again" or in other words, when God causes there to be a spiritual rebirthing in the human heart. A whole new creation occurs! 2 Corinthians 5:17 - This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! To be "Born Again" is to have new spiritual life placed within us by the power of God. It's a new life with new power to please God. A life with the spiritual resources to live pleasing to the Lord. 1 John 3:9 - Those who have been born into God's family do not make a practice of sinning, because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they are children of God.
Just as sin is natural to old nature holiness to the new nature. Sin is not the master of the "Born Again"! Romans 6:14 - Sin is no longer your master. Romans 6:18 - Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living. To be "Born Again" by the power of God is to be set free from the power of sin. A true Believer does have to commit sin. That power has been broken. Believers can choose to live free from sinning because they've been given a whole new nature, a new life.
