Jesus The God Given Name:
Jesus did not come by His name accidentally, He was given it by His heavenly Father. Joseph, Mary's future husband, received a visitation from an angel of the Lord in a dream. He was told, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home to as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, AND YOU ARE TO GIVE HIM THE NAME JESUS, because He will save His people from their sins." (Mt. 1:20,21) Joseph responds in obedience and takes Mary to be his wife. Mary gave birth to a son and Joseph "gave him the name Jesus", (Mt. 1:25).
The name Jesus and Joshua mean the same thing: Jehovah- Savior. Jesus is the Greek word and Joshua is the Hebrew. Jesus was given the name that means Jehovah-Savior because he was going to save His people from their sin, (Mt. 1:21).
Jesus Given The Father's Name
During His prayer in Jn. 17 Jesus says something about His name that could be difficult at first to receive and understand.
Jn. 17:11,12 - I will remain in the world no longer, but thet are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of YOUR NAME - THE NAME YOU GAVE ME - so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept safe by THAT NAME YOU GAVE ME.
We've already seen where Jesus was given the name JESUS or Jehovah-Savior. According to the Lord He had been given the Father's name.
Jn. 5:43 - I have come in my Father's name.
When born into an earthly family it has in general been the custom for the children to inherit the family name. We then are called by our father's name. Jesus was given the Heavenly Father's name and came to accurately reveal an express that name to the people chosen out of the world by God to be HIs children.
Jesus Name Exalted
The prophetic word given through Isaiah says, "Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name; make known among the nations what he has done, AND proclaim that His name is exalted."
Christ was given the name Jesus and Heb. 1:4 tells us that Jesus, "Jesus became as much superior to the angels as the NAME HE HAS INHERITED is superior to theirs". Jesus has inherted the Father's name. Jesus has been made both LORD and Christ.
Acts 2:36 - Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Jesus was made by the Father to be LORD. This is something God Himself chose to do. Ph. 2:9,10 says, "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him THE NAME that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father." Christ's place in the heavenlies is "far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, AND every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come," (Eph.1:21).
There is no greater name than the one given to Jesus.
